---|
Thioglycolic acid, with the chemical formula C2H4O2S, is a toxic, colorless, transparent liquid, sulfur-containing organic compound with a strong pungent odor. It is miscible with water, soluble in ethanol, ether, and soluble in common solvents. Thioglycolic acid is a weak organic acid that looks clear and transparent.
Thioglycolic acid contains thiol and carboxyl groups in its structure and can be used as an antioxidant, catalyst, etc. As early as the 1940s, thioglycolic acid was used as a cosmetic raw material in products such as hair removal and hair curling. The role of thioglycolic acid in perming is to break the disulfide bonds of amino acids, which can make the hair soft and produce a series of changes. Then, an oxidant is used to restore the broken disulfide bonds and then fix the hair; calcium thioglycolate is used in hair removal products; thioglycolic acid and its salts (calcium salt, ammonium salt) are used in cosmetics. In perming and hair curling products, too high or too low a content of thioglycolic acid is not beneficial to styling. Generally speaking, if the content is too high, the curl retention rate is not high, and if the content is too low, there is no perming effect.
